Residential Moving Tips For Getting Into Your First Apartment

If you are about to move out of your parents' house and move into your first apartment, you are likely excited about achieving what is a big milestone for many young adults. Your parents may have some advice for you about what you need to do, but another way you can make sure everything goes smoothly is to hire a professional residential moving company to assist with getting all your stuff where it needs to go. Here are some tips to keep in mind when moving out of your parents' house and into a place of your own for the first time.

Ask Your Parents If You Can Leave Certain Childhood Items in Your Old Room or Elsewhere in the House

Sometimes when people move from a house into an apartment, they need to rent storage space because an apartment isn't as big as a house and there might be stuff from the house they can't take with them. But when you are moving out of your parents' house, it's likely you can use their house as a free storage space for at least some things.

Your mother might even prefer that you leave certain childhood items with nostalgic value, like your high school trophy case in your old bedroom. You might have to negotiate a bit if you want additional storage space down in the basement or somewhere else in the house, but the idea is, you can make your move easier by not bringing every single of your possessions with you when the moving company shows up.

Make Sure You Have Full Access and the Utilities Turned On or the Moving Company Might Not Be Able to Help You

When moving into your first apartment, talk to the landlord about the move-in date. Make sure you have all necessary keys to the building or the apartment or ask the landlord to be available on that day if necessary. You'll also of course want to make sure the electricity is turned on at the very least, if not other utilities. Your moving company isn't going to be able to get your stuff inside if they can't get past the locked gate or see what they are doing because the lights won't turn on.

Consider Insurance or Unpacking Assistance

Some moving companies offer optional services like help with packing or unpacking and most moving companies will also offer insurance for what they are moving. If you are moving far away from family and friends, you might need some help getting everything unpacked upon arrival. The right insurance will also give you peace of mind and ensure that you don't start off your new phase of life with damaged goods that will cost money to repair.
